Leitersburg Ruritan Club

Ruritan General Meeting                                        September 5, 2017

George Souders (president) opened the September general meeting at 6:50 PM. 


Jenny Coleman led the club in the first verse of “My Country Tis of Thee.” 


Doc Johns gave the invocation.

Everyone enjoyed a meal of hot dogs and corn.

George called the meeting back to order at 7:22 PM.


Members present: George Souders, Bruce Barr, Jenny Coleman, Chris Foster, Chris Bittle, Doc Johns, Kenny Rippeon, Bruce Melton, Donny Norvelle, Bill Cross, Jerry Elmore, Scott Horning, and Brenda Horning.  Steve Kidwell (lieutenant governor) also attended the meeting.

Steve Kidwell reminded us to send in money for Build Your Dollar grant (our club has 2), quarterly reports are due at the end of September, zone meeting on September 15 at 6:30 PM at Maugansville, district meeting on September 23rd at 6:00 at Keedysville.  This Thursday meeting in Hancock to see about starting a new club.  District convention at Rose Grove on November 4.  Each club is asked to send something for auction.

5 members will attend the zone meeting and 5 members will attend the district meeting.


Finance committee recommends purchasing 4 small CDs instead of 1 large one.  The next finance meeting is at 6:30 on September 25 before the board meeting.

Scott Horning reported that the Peach Festival was an overall success this year.  Vendors were pleased.  Peach Festival committee will begin meeting in February.  Chris Bittle will be working on a logo for the Peach Festival that will be used on the website and everywhere else.  She may run a contest and invite Tech High students to participate.  Jenny made a motion to have a $200 award for the logo brand winner.  Chris Foster seconded the motion.  Motion passed. Scott recommended waiting to work out the details.

Jenny gave the treasurer’s report

Building committee report from Bruce Barr.  There is a seepage test needs to be completed.  Things can proceed from there.

Bruce Melton from the nominating committee is asking for nominations for President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer.  George encouraged all members to consider this opportunity.

New Business

A rock test done was done by engineering firm; the bill was $525.  This test was to determine location for holes for seepage test.  There was discussion on whether to bring every bill to the general membership for approval or to have a budget for the new building.  Bill Cross made a motion to pay the bill, Kenny seconded the motion.  Motion passed. 

We usually purchase a ½-page advertisement at a cost of $40 for the district convention.  Bruce Barr made a motion that we purchase the ad and Bruce Melton seconded the motion.  Motion passed.

About 20 athletes from Special Olympics practice every Wednesday night from 5:30-7:00 PM.  Help is needed with putting out water for the athletes.  Several members volunteered to help with this.  On Saturday, September 23, there is a regional meet from 7:00 AM -12:00 PM here at the park. 

 Jenny reported that Ruri-Teen dues have been paid through next October 2018.

Brenda Horning would like to invite the last year’s princess and the 3 finalists for this year to the next general meeting to receive scholarship checks.  Jenny Coleman made a motion that the club pay for their meals (as well as 2 guests each).  Bill Cross seconded the motion.  Motion passed.
There was a concert that raised $3000 for families involved in the fire at Woodbridge and the Modern Woodsmen matched that with $2500.  Lynn Bibbee should be contacted for more details.

Jerry Elmore asked about Micah’s Backpack for this year.  Jenny will check to see how we can help.

Chris Foster recommended coming up with ideas to raise money for a new building.


Next general meeting will be on October 2 at the Parlor House at 6:30 PM.
